Warning From Medical Groups Against The Use Of Parasite Drugs To Treat Covid-19

Oct 21

There has been a claim that a medicine that is used to treat parasites in farm animals can help to fight COVID 19. According to health experts and medical groups, this claim is false. Medical organizations are asking people not to take ivermectin, and doctors should stop prescribing it as well. There are several reasons behind it. The first is that it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat COVID-19. Another reason is that according to the FDA, taking large doses of this drug can be dangerous. In addition, a National Institutes of Health panel found there's "insufficient evidence" for or against the use of the drug for COVID-19.

While talking with UF Health Jacksonville,  Dr. Chirag Patel said that "This is something that has become a misinformation campaign that is so well done, it is tricking people into believing there is some benefit with this medication."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pharmacies in the U.S. had 88,000 weekly prescriptions for the medication in the mid of August. This is a 24-fold increase from pre-COVID levels. At the same time, there was a five-fold increase in the U.S. poison control centers' emergency calls related to the drug. There were even some incidents that required hospitalization. Dr. Chirag Patel further said," If you take something you are not supposed to, you run the risk of toxicity. You run the risk of increased side effects."

According to Dr. Patel, the side effects of the medication may include swelling, rash, itching, and fever. Dr. Patel further added that the patient who takes blood thinners might actually cause increased bleeding risk by using a medication like ivermectin.

Therefore, the top professional groups of pharmacists and doctors of the U.S. have appealed to immediately end the drug's use outside of research. Two pharmacist groups and the American Medical Association said, "We are urging physicians, pharmacists, and other prescribers — trusted healthcare professionals in their communities — to warn patients against the use of ivermectin outside of FDA-approved indications and guidance,"

Dr. Patel further explains that the risks of having ivermectin for treating COVID outweigh the known benefits. This is the reason that doctors should not recommend it. According to DR Patel, having ivermectin is just "like something ludicrous like drinking bleach to clean your body. You wouldn't drink hand soap to clean the germs in your body."

Dr. Patel urges that the medicine should only be taken for treating what it is intended for. The FDA approves ivermectin to treat the infections caused by roundworms and other tiny parasites in humans as well as animals like dogs, cows, and horses. The tablets can be taken to treat internal parasites, and the ointment can be used to treat external skin infections or to treat head lice. This medication usually works by paralyzing the worms and killing their offspring.

According to some sources, the doctors who are prescribing ivermectin to their patients say that their patients have informed them that by using the medication, there is a cut down on the sickness caused by COVID-19. However, due to the negative publicity of this medication, these doctors felt hesitant to speak on camera.
