How Mendable Psychology & Integrative Health Helps With Weight Loss

Mar 19

Mendable Psychology & Integrative Health located in Grande Prairie continues to study and help provide behavioral psychology to help understand why we behave the way we do when it comes to weight loss.  There's no shortage of programs to choose from where each of them claims to have the key to shedding pounds and feeling happy.  Multiple popular programs now exist through smartphones and apps that all claim that behavioral psychology is finally helping people lose weight for good.

Studies are starting to show that psychology techniques can be used to help people successfully lose weight and the goal at Mendable Psychology is to help individuals with their mental health through studying these patterns as well as providing help with other psychological issues.

Some of those plans are straight forward but a lot all follow the same pattern and steps.

1. Goal setting

The majority of weight loss programs will start by asking you to set a goal.  Research continues to show that this goal actually will motivate you to change your mindset and behavior whether it's to lose weight, eat better or ultimately just exercise more.  Psychology studies have proven that setting just one goal ultimately isn't as effective as setting multiple milestones and continuing to update your goal setting.  Not one thing can lead to weight loss but a combination of goals has been proven to psychologically improve someone's ability to continue on their weight loss journey.

As a Grande Prairie Psychologist, it's been previously thought that goals had to be specific, like aiming to lose 2 pounds per week or 10 pounds per month but more recently it's been discovered that setting vaguer goals is far more effective.  Things like exercising for ten minutes per day, being more active, or eating less fast food are all goals that psychologically seem to help.

Research still hasn't proven whether one should set big or small goals but either has been proven to be successful in sustaining some success.

Psychological Support

One of the most forgot about psychological benefits to weight loss is support from peers and family. Getting feedback on a regular basis from an inner circle of confident and positive people helps create a sense of accountability in your journey.

Research continues to show that the majority of people on a weight loss program with a family member or friend are more likely to stick with the plan and ultimately lose more weight.  Having engagement from these people provides a sense of confidence and motivation on all days...good and bad.

Self-accountability and monitoring

Holding yourself accountable and monitoring your progress is arguably one of the most effective strategies in the field of behavioral psychology.  Accountability isn't uncommon in most weight loss plans but self monitoring helps by making you more aware of what you're eating and drinking and what is happening to your weight loss throughout your goals.  By tracking and monitoring your food intake and activity levels you can help curb overeating and indulging in unhealthy foods.

Most people who are successful at losing weight do so by being able to psychologically train their minds to keep themselves accountable. Research shows that weighing yourself at least once per week at the same time can help lead to the greatest success.

A lot of weight loss programs involve the counting of macros and research has proven that most successful people at losing weight and keeping it off take more time to weigh and control their portions and macros. Food diaries work, but often time with our mental health struggles we tend to make excuses that we are to tired or they don't work.  One psychological trick to combat this is to start weighing your food and then if weight loss starts to stall to start doing it again.
