Treatment of vaginal problems depends on the cause of the problem, the severity of your symptoms and your general health. Not all vaginal problems can be prevented, but regular examinations can help diagnose problems that affect your vagina as quickly as possible. Most common women problem on vaginal are not a result of a serious illness, but they can be very uncomfortable and distressing.

What is vaginal discharge?

Vaginal discharge is the fluid that flows from the vagina to keep its surface moist. Most women have some vaginal discharge every day. A normal type of vaginal secretion gradually changes in amount and appearance throughout the menstrual cycle. Most women also have vaginal discharge after sexual intercourse, particularly if they are aroused. Women who do not have regular sex may not notice changes in their normal vaginal secretion.

What is vaginal irritation?

Vaginal irritations that cause itching or burning around the opening of your vagina (vulva) can be caused by sweat or contact with irritating soaps, perfumes, lotions, spermicidal jellies, douches or sprays. Most vaginal irritations are mild and clear up quickly. However, some vaginal irritations become more severe and require special treatment.

What is yeast infection?

Yeast infections are caused by too much growth of yeast, a type of fungus. Most women have some yeast infections at some time during their life. Most women can treat vaginal yeast infections by themselves – either with over-the-counter or prescription medications – and relieve their symptoms within a few days.

About 40 percent of all women in industrialized countries have frequent vaginal yeast infections, usually caused by Candida albicans. Most of these women experience no symptoms, but some develop chronic or recurrent vaginal yeast infections.

What is vaginal bleeding?

A change in color, amount or frequency of vaginal discharge may signal a serious problem. Vaginal bleeding – a little spotting between menstrual periods – usually isn't serious. Most women have some vaginal bleeding after menopause. Most vaginal bleeding is caused by a problem in the lower genital tract – the uterus, cervix or vagina. Most vaginal bleeding is not serious and can be treated at home. However, some types of vaginal bleeding may indicate a more serious condition that requires medical treatment.

What is IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small object placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy. Most often IUDs are T-shaped and made of flexible plastic. Most women with an IUD do not have any symptoms, but some may experience pain, bleeding or cramps around the time the IUD is put in place. Most women can safely use an IUD; however, it's important to discuss your medical history with your health care provider before getting an IUD. IUDs are not recommended for some women.
